What is Accident Benefits?

“Accident Benefits” or “no-fault coverage” are available to individuals involved in motor vehicle accidents under the Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule. The benefits that are available to insured persons vary depending on each case, the severity of injuries, and each specific insurance policy and its limits. Generally, you may be entitled to one or more of the following benefits:

·       Medical and Rehabilitation Benefits: The insurer will fund an injured person’s rehabilitative treatments after an accident, including for physiotherapy, massage, chiropractic, concussion therapy, psychological counselling, prescriptions, and more.

·       Attendant Care Benefits: If you suffer more serious injuries that impair your ability to conduct your daily personal tasks (like dressing, undressing, showering, bathing, etc.), you can hire a service provider to help you. The insurer will compensate you for your attendant care expenses.

·       Income Replacement Benefits: When your physical or psychological injuries prevent you from returning to your pre-accident employment, we will apply for income replacement benefits. The insurer will pay 70% of your gross weekly income, up to a maximum of $400 per week (or more if you have purchased optional benefits).

·       Non-Earner Benefits: If you were not working at the time of accident and suffered a complete inability to carry on normal life, we will apply for non-earner benefits. The insurer will pay $185 per week to those eligible.

·       Caregiver or Childcare Benefits: If you sustained catastrophic injuries and were the primary caregiver to a dependent or child, you may be entitled to the caregiver benefit when you can no longer provide caregiving duties. This benefit helps with the expense of hiring someone to perform caregiving duties on behalf of the injured person.

·       Housekeeping and Home Maintenance: If you have purchased optional benefits or suffered catastrophic injuries, you are also entitled to apply for housekeeping and home maintenance benefits.

·       Death and Funeral Expenses: If an insured person dies in an accident, the insurer may pay money to some family members, including the person’s spouse, children, and dependants. The insurer is also required to pay for funeral expenses incurred.

·       Other Expenses: The insurer may also pay for other expenses incurred, including transportation costs, lost educational expenses, replacement costs of lost or damaged items and clothing, and more.
